Sabre Engineering is a leading provider of engineering, maintenance, and project solutions to Australia's major coal operations.

We are currently seeking an experienced Train Load Out (TLO) Specialist to join our team supporting operations at a mine site in Queensland's Bowen Basin. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on high-performance coal handling systems in one of Australia's premier metallurgical coal operations, contributing to safe, efficient, and compliant train loading processes.

This senior supervisory role is ideal for a hands-on leader with strong technical expertise in fixed plant structural and mechanical systems, particularly in coal handling infrastructure such as train load out bins, conveyors, surge structures, supports, and associated mechanical equipment. You will oversee construction, maintenance, repair, and upgrade projects to ensure structural integrity, mechanical reliability, safety compliance, and operational efficiency.

About the Role:

Reporting to the Project / Maintenance Manager, you will supervise teams of mechanical fitters, boilermakers, structural steelworkers, riggers, and other trades personnel. Your focus will be on delivering safe, high-quality execution of TLO-related structural and mechanical scopes, including shutdowns, brownfield modifications, repairs (e.g., bin support stools, ring beams, conveyor structures), and new construction/installation activities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and supervise structural and mechanical construction, installation, repair, and maintenance activities on TLO infrastructure, including bins, conveyors, gates, weigh systems, supports, bracing, and mechanical components.
  • Plan and coordinate daily work scopes, resource allocation, and trade teams to meet project schedules, budgets, and quality standards.
  • Conduct pre-start briefings, toolbox talks, and ensure all work complies with site safety systems, isolation procedures, risk assessments, and client standards.
  • Perform and oversee inspections of structural and mechanical assets, identify defects or risks (e.g., corrosion, fatigue, overload impacts), and implement corrective actions or repairs.
  • Manage shutdown and project execution, including scaffolding coordination, rigging, welding, bolting, and heavy mechanical assembly.
  • Drive safety leadership through hazard identification, incident investigations, safety observations, and promoting a zero-harm culture.
  • Liaise with client operations, maintenance, engineering, and rail teams to align TLO works with production requirements and minimise downtime.
  • Monitor workmanship, material usage, and compliance with design drawings, specifications, and RPEQ-certified repairs where applicable.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement in structural reliability, mechanical performance, cost control, and environmental compliance.
  • Mentor and develop team members, including competency assessments and training support.
To succeed in this role, you will have:
  • Proven supervisory experience in structural and mechanical scopes on coal mine fixed plant, preferably TLO, CHPP, or similar coal handling/load out facilities.
  • Strong background in coal mining environments, with hands-on trade experience (e.g., Boilermaker/Welder, Mechanical Fitter) highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated leadership of trade teams in construction, shutdowns, maintenance, and brownfield projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of structural integrity issues (e.g., corrosion, support repairs, bracing) and mechanical systems in heavy industrial settings.
  • Excellent safety record and commitment to Queensland coal mining safety regulations (e.g., Coal Mining Safety and Health Act/Regulation).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and manage permit-to-work systems.
If you are a safety-driven leader with proven structural/mechanical expertise in TLO or coal handling infrastructure, ready to supervise high-performing teams, we encourage you to apply!
