A couple of years ago I had to tell one of my candidates she was unsuccessful for an FM position I'd put her forward for. I think I was more upset than she was. It was a massive blow to my professional ego as my candidates almost always got the job. So I had to find out who could have possibly beaten her to the punch, because she ticked every box and then some.
So out of curiousity I watched his career. And it was like watching a shooting star. People I knew raved about him. Employers kept handing him more responsibility. Soon enough, he was promoted to Head of Residential, overseeing a number of sites across Queensland.
First thing he did? Worked 150 hours a fortnight to make sure every person in his team felt supported.
He then reinvested those savings back into the homes. We're talking home upgrades and additional support roles, making sure nobody burned out holding the whole thing together.
He has done this at multiple facilities throughout his career. One home in regional Queensland had burned through six facility managers in four years before he arrived. He turned it around in three months and didn't touch a single agency hour for the next four and a half years.
The most interesting part of this role is that he's not necessarily looking for a seasoned CNM. He's happy to speak with an Clinical Nurses or Senior RNs who are ready for the next step up. He was lucky enough to always have strong leaders mentoring him through his career, and paying that forward is genuinely important to him.
The organisation itself is a Catholic not-for-profit with a genuine service mission. They're in the business of uplifting lives and building communities, from older Australians through to children and people with disabilities. The executive team have given this Head of Residential full operational autonomy, which in practice means decisions move fast and the budget conversations have already been won.
If you're a Senior RN or Clinical Nurse who's never been given the opportunity to shine, then call me immediately and let me tell you what your future looks like if you join this organisation.
