In addition to the base salary and 15.4% superannuation, the Senior Federal Prosecutor (SFP) position attracts a $26,832 per annum allowance in line with the Determination 2024-4 Prosecutor Allowance.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (Cth) (CDPP) is committed to attracting and retaining lawyers of the highest calibre. To succeed in SFP role you will have a wealth of knowledge and robust background in litigation with deep understanding of prosecutions.

As a SFP, you will utilise cutting edge technology to assess briefs of evidence.You will apply relevant legislation, policy and procedures to frame criminal charges and determine how allegations of criminal wrongdoing are to be alleged before the court. You will exercise judgment to make legal decisions and recommendations, sometimes working to deadlines within tight timeframes. You will have carriage of significant prosecutions on behalf of the Director and will provide legal advice to the Director and partner agencies to drive prosecution outcomes.

You do not need to have worked at CDPP previously to secure this role, however you will need to be a highly skilled and critical-thinking lawyer with an aptitude for criminal law and an understanding of the important role an independent prosecutor plays in Australia’s system of criminal justice. You will also have a desire to develop your career with the diverse, stimulating and complex prosecution work of the CDPP.

About the Role/Position Duties

In addition to meeting the Integrated Leadership System profile of the Executive Level 1, primary outcomes and accountabilities will involve:  

• Managing the conduct of large and complex matters, sometimes managing a team working on a matter, appearing in court and/or instructing counsel as required;
• Researching and analysing data, evaluating complex information and sources to draw accurate conclusions to inform high level advice, reports and recommendations;
• Liaising with internal and external stakeholders, including investigative agencies, court officials, defence counsel and other parties;
• Developing key relationships and responding to complex matters, driving improvements to prosecution processes;
• Regularly reviewing file and matter management activities to identify opportunities for continuous improvement, making changes or recommendations as appropriate;
• Preparing and providing legal advice on complex legislative, regulatory or procedural matters;
• Utilising systems, computer-based applications and other tools for legal and practice management including research, matters and file management, reporting and resource monitoring; and
• Providing leadership and manage staff in day-to-day activities including the ability to develop, coach and mentor staff and building commitment to shared goals.
